Cleburne passenger charged with attempted capital murder after Aug. 24 pursuit

A woman who was a passenger in a vehicle fleeing Cleburne police in August now faces an attempted capital murder of a peace officer charge, according to the Cleburne Police Department. Zora Bliss, 47, was charged under the law of parties, a first-degree felony. She had already been held in the Johnson County Jail since the Aug. 24 incident on charges of aggravated assault against a peace officer and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Investigators allege in an arrest warrant affidavit that Bliss assisted driver Jason Stroud, 43, as he fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers. The chase started around 6:50 p.m. after reports of someone brandishing a firearm, then moved through Alvarado and north on Interstate 35W before ending near the Sam's Club at 600 S. Burleson Blvd. in Burleson. Stroud shot a Cleburne officer in the leg there before officers from another agency shot and killed him. Cleburne Police Chief Rob Severance said the wounded officer continues to recover well. Cleburne police say their investigation into Bliss is complete. A Texas Rangers investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains active.
